On day one of the Genesis Invitational, Dustin Johnson’s rust was evident when he back-handed a shot into the greenside bunker before flubbing the following ball in front of him.
Johnson, 37, birdied the 9th with a tramliner, but struggled with his tee shot down the Riviera’s driveable par-4 10th.
Johnson’s tee shot landed in the fairway bunker, and his second shot landed in the greenside bunker, where it plugged on the downslope.
Johnson got into the sand after about 10 seconds of contemplation and instantly back-handed his ball into the centre of the bunker with a left-handed stroke.
He then squandered even more time on the next shot, flubbed it right in front of his eyes.
We could all connect to that, as it was one of the few strokes we saw on the PGA Tour.
Johnson subsequently splashed out and holed the putt for a double-bogey six, bringing his round total to 2-over par.

In recent weeks, there has been a lot of speculation that Johnson is set to join a breakaway Saudi Golf League with players like Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson.
Johnson was recently asked about Ian Poulter’s $30 million offer to join the Saudi Golf League, and he responded: “I can’t speak for Ian. Yeah, I’m sure they’re – well, yeah, obviously they have or haven’t, I’m not allowed to disclose. You’d have to ask Ian that one.”
Pressed further whether he had been offered a similar offer, Johnson said with a smirk: “No, not similar. It’s not similar.”
Johnson has only played twice on the PGA Tour in 2022, despite having one of the longest PGA Tour off-seasons of all time with his partner Paulina Gretzky. Oh, and only a few weeks ago, he chose the Saudi International over Pebble Beach.
In the last 12 months, the 24-time PGA Tour winner has dropped from first to sixth in the world rankings.
Golf fans couldn’t stop themselves from expressing their displeasure on social media on Thursday evening, especially after seeing DJ appear to rush his sand shots.
No Laying Up summed up what many fans were all thinking:
