Mickelson Says He Won’t Play in the Rocket Mortgage Classic Ever Again

Well, it looks like Phil’s debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week was the only time fans will get to see Lefty tee off at the event.
In case you missed it, Mickelson got wrapped up in some drama from well over a decade ago that involves a shady bookmaker who once stiffed him on hundreds of thousands of dollars. The incident was first reported by The Detroit news shortly before Mickelson made his announcement.
“It was so much effort for me to be here and to have that type of unnecessary attack,” said Mickelson in addressing the story.
“Not like I care, it happened 20-something years ago, it’s just the lack of appreciation. Yeah, I don’t see that happening. I don’t see me coming back. Not that I don’t love the people here, they have been great, but not with that type of thing happening.”
Phil was obviously not happy about the attention the piece brought and his lawyer spoke with ESPN to raise questions regarding how the release of the story coincided with the tournament. He maintained that it was meant to serve as a distraction considering Phil was cleared of any involvement with the mobster’s scheme years ago.
“I’m disappointed they would curiously pick this week to write an article about a bet that was made over 20 years ago and a jury trial that took place in 2007, where the guy who was convicted is dead and where the only purpose for this article is to embarrass Phil Mickelson,” said Mickelson’s attorney in an interview with Bob Harig of ESPN.
While he has been unable to repeat his success at the PGA Championship, Phil has managed to finish at 3 under on Sunday.
